Aarya Season 3 Review: Sushmita Sen is a brilliant actress and there is no doubt about it. When she made her comeback on screen in 2020 with Aarya, just like everyone else, I was also very impressed and thought that it was one of her finest performances ever. Usually, a show tends to lose its charm season on season, but Aarya has only got better and bigger.

Directed by Ram Madhvani, it is a crime drama starring Sushmita Sen as ‘Aarya’ – a lady who decides to protect her family from the mafia gangs after her husband’s death. While the first two seasons revolve around Aarya’s efforts to find her husband’s murderer and protect her family, the third season explores her life as she becomes the don herself.

SPOILER ALERT! Season 3 begins with a scene of Aarya getting shot but it then takes you to the flashback. It reveals that Aarya has decided to expand her drug business. However, she soon comes across Sooraj – played by Indraneil Sengupta – who has only one mission i.e. to kill Aarya to seek revenge for his dead wife.

Aarya 3 is not just about the battles between the mafia gangs, it is also about battles within. Sushmita Sen as Aarya continues to explain herself that whatever she is doing is to protect her family. She reiterates this multiple times and tells the same to her children too. From the previous seasons, we know that Aarya never wanted to be a part of the mafia world but now that she is a don herself, she uses ‘protection to family’ only as an excuse to justify her deeds to herself.

Sushmita Sen as Aarya is beyond outstanding. She portrays several emotions on-screen with utmost perfection. She is not just fierce in the show but also vulnerable. Sushmita’s depiction of both these emotions is very well refined. It is Sushmita’s elegance in her dialogue delivery that sets her apart and makes Aarya a show worth watching.

Ram Madhvani has made his show stronger with seasoned support cast around Sushmita. Indraneil Sengupta is brilliant in his depiction of Sooraj – a complex character. Vishwajeet Pradhan plays the role of Sampat in his unique style and his dialect is very impressive. One person who has evolved as an actor is the 22-year-old Viren Vazirani, who plays the role of Veer, Aarya’s son. The young actor justifies his increase in screen time from the last two seasons and proves that he deserved it. On the other hand, Maya Sarao as Aarya’s friend gets less screen time.

Ila Arun also joins Aarya 3 as Nalini – a drug dealer who is now ready for a face-off with Sushmita’s character. Even though Madhvani has not explored her character a lot in the first part, there is a hint that she is going to be at the forefront in part two.

However, one actor who leaves you confused is Sikandar Kher. He plays Daulat in the show but has hardly any screen time and or relevance in season 3. There’s a hint of his new love story in development but Madhvani does not explore it at least in the first part. Vikas Kumar also returns as ACP Khan – who is after Aarya’s life and taking all possible efforts to arrest her. Kumar adds an element of calm in his character and fits well on screen.

Strong performances cannot save a film or a show if the writing is not good. Aarya 3 passes that test too with flying colours. The plot is gripping, intriguing and keeps you on the edge of your seat. What is also worth mentioning in Aarya 3 is the classical twist to the background music. It is addictive and adds intensity to the show.

The third season of Aarya is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
