While many cats watch TV passively, others get overstimulated by the visuals and attack the screen.

At some point in our lives, we all must have dozed off while watching TV but just as the TV is switched off, we wake up. Now, a video that shows a cat displaying this strange behaviour is amusing the netizens. Last week, a popular cat Instagram account shared a clip that showed a cat dozing off while sitting in front of a TV that was playing cartoons. Just as the cat’s owner switches off the TV, the cat wakes up and looks towards the screen as if prompting the owner to turn it back on.

The text over this video says, “if I shut the tv off in front of my cat who clearly fell asleep, she insists she was still watching”. This clip has so far gathered over 1.9 lakh likes since it was posted on November 16. A person referred to the cat, named Ella, as “a senior lady trapped in a cat’s body”.

Many others shared how the cat’s behaviour of sleeping in front of the TV matched with their own similar habit. Echoing this sentiment, a person wrote, “good night miss ma’am!!!! Lmaooo I know she’s mad. Reminds me when I was young and would do the same. my mom would like to go to bed!”. Another person wrote, “HAHAHAHA!! Same thing my grandpa would do!! The man would be snoring LOUDLY and wake up as soon as that channel changed.”

Some people theorised that maybe the cat was using the TV’s white noise to lull herself to sleep. Making this point, an Instagram user wrote, “We need the soothing TV background sound to help us sleep sometimes.” Another person wrote, “Maybe she needs background noise to help her fall asleep.”

In September, a hilarious video of two cats trying to catch a tennis ball went viral. The clip showed the cats standing on their hind legs and using their paws to follow a tennis ball as tennis star Novak Djokovic bounces the ball multiple times on the court before serving. The caption of the video read, “Their new favourite sport.”

In April, a similar video went viral that showed a small kitten keenly following a football match and trying to catch the football as it was being kicked around.

The video’s caption read, “Meanwhile the goalkeeper caught it just once, she caught it 7 times. If that is not the definition of a legend, I don’t know what is.”

While many cats watch TV passively, others get overstimulated by the visuals and attack the screen, risking their safety and damaging the screen.
