Aspiring IAS and IPS officers must pass the multi-stage UPSC CSE exam, including prelims, mains and an interview. Those who crack the UPSC exam undergo specialised training to assume roles like Superintendent of Police. This training aims to equip IPS officers for the challenges of maintaining law and order.
Candidates who clear the UPSC exam undergo initial training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The training begins with a 3-month foundation course covering the basics relevant to the services. Subsequently, IPS officers proceed to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad for further training. Meanwhile, IAS officers continue their training at LBSNAA.
Trainee IPS officers at SVPNPA undergo an intense 11-month program. The curriculum includes mandatory subjects addressing both physical and mental well-being. Activities like PT, gym sessions, races, sports, athletics, swimming, horse riding, yoga and map reading are crucial for professional growth.
Mandatory participation in cultural programs reflects a holistic approach. This structured training is pivotal in preparing IPS officers for future challenges and ensuring their overall development. After an initial 11-month training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), IPS officer trainees undergo a specialised 6-month program focused on field training in their allotted cadre district.
Following this, they return to SVPNPA for a second phase of training. Completion of all training stages, totalling 2 years and 2 months, is mandatory before posting. Throughout training, officers receive a monthly salary of Rs 35,000. Post-training, they are deployed to various districts to assume their roles.
Securing admission into the Indian Police Service (IPS) mandates successful clearance of the Civil Services Exam (CSE) administered by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) with high marks. The CSE serves as a broad examination for recruiting candidates across various services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc. It involves three stages: Prelims, Mains and an Interview, concluding with a medical test the day following the UPSC Interview.
