In the realm of weddings, certain unwritten rules are considered sacrosanct, and one of the cardinal principles is to never don an outfit that could be similar to the bride’s dress. However, defying convention, a 21-year-old woman named Sophie recently found herself at the center of trolls when she opted to wear an off-the-shoulder white gown to her own sister’s wedding. Taking to TikTok to address the situation, she sought to provide clarity on the controversy surrounding her choice of attire. A “big response”, as she described it, prompted her to share the backstory behind the seemingly audacious move.
Contrary to expectations, Sophie revealed that she did not decide on her own outfit for the occasion. The woman explained in a video, “I didn’t actually want to wear white, and I did receive a big response for wearing this as a bridesmaid’s dress to our wedding, and so I thought I’d just clear it up because I did not want to be wearing that.”
She went on to add, “I thought I’d be wearing that on my wedding day, not that exactly, but white.”
As Sophie delved further into her reasoning, it became apparent that her sister, the bride, had not only approved but actively requested her to wear white.
However, it seems like Sophie’s family has a history of bridesmaids and other relatives wearing white at weddings. She informed that she associated white attire with an unfortunate incident that had left an indelible mark on her, contributing to her reservations about wearing it. Citing a family anecdote, she recounted, “On top of that, when I was younger, our nan fell out of a wheelchair on our mum’s wedding day and she wore white to that wedding.”
“I just think it’s bad luck, so now I wasn’t trying to wear white but that’s what she wanted. That’s what the bride picked… so I wasn’t happy about it either,” she added.
It wasn’t long before Sophie’s video went viral and viewers reacted to it rather generously. One user wrote, “You definitely outshone your sister! Gorgeous.” Another commented: “Omg twins!”
Some others were quick to comment on how gorgeous the bride looked on her big day. “She looks so lovely Soph,” wrote one. “You and your sister are very beautiful,” read another comment.
Despite the raised eyebrows, the old saying stands true that what the bride wants, the bride gets – even if it means donning a similar dress to theirs.
